Dharwa is literally the ‘dwar’ or entrance into the history and geography of the
state. In extension, it translates to a place of rest on a long journey. For millennia, Dharwad served as a gateway between the western ghats and the plains, and became a place of relaxation for travellers. Sanskrit words ‘dwar’ and ‘wada’ or town, together form the word Dharwad, translating to ‘entrance town’.
